Hey guys, so as you guys may have noticed I’ve written extensively about #NuNairobi( the artistic revolution currently occurring in my city)- on this blog and on other publications as well. Well a few months ago I was approached with the idea to curate an event based on the #NuNairobi scene as it blows up and continues to manifest itself to the world . I was really skeptical because let’s be honest, I’m a lot of things but I wasn’t an event organizer; but after a period of thought I decided to give it a go! Anything that can help in the growth of the culture and scene seems not only worthwhile but necessary at this point in time.
When Just a Band announced their 2 year hiatus earlier this year, a lot of fans were reasonably devastated. Blinky Bill promised a debut solo album titled ” “Everyone’s Just Winging It & Other Fly Tales” by the end of the year but a day after his birthday on August 26th he surprised us with a free E.P which was uploaded to Soundcloud and Bandcamp.
The greatly anticipated sophomore album by Frank Ocean is finally here. Frank has officially pulled a Lazarus on us, but he came back better than before. He also released a visual album “Endless” which is impressionistic to say the least. I must say the announcement was underwhelming at first probably because I didn’t even think it was true. Every week there would be a lot of buzz about him dropping the album which turned out to be bullshit. The disappointment would kill me every single time. For us die hard Frank Ocean fans, it’s the end of a long wait…I’m low-key going to miss all the funny memes and trolls though. On a more personal note, “Nostalgia Ultra” got me through a lot of shit in the past so I mean it when I say I needed this album. I actually had to listen to “Channel Orange” one more time before diving wholeheartedly into “Blonde”. It’s safe to say right now that my heart wasn’t ready.
It’s interesting how these days a lot of the music I listen to is by Canadian artists. 60 % of my playlist is made up of artists such as Kaytranada, Pomo, BADBADNOTGOOD, dvsn, Majid Jordan etc and those are just the well known ones! The Canadian music scene has officially blown up and I’m totally here for it! Another artist who’s been everywhere lately is River Tiber. You might recognize him from Kaytranada’s LP “99.9%” in the song “Vivid Dreams”, but now we can get a glimpse of his own mind in his debut E.P “Indigo”.
In the past year alone, the underground music scene in Nairobi has been bursting with so much talent and ingenuity. It has many hidden gems who you may not necessarily hear on the radio or see on television. You just need to know where to look.
PyroNairo might be a hashtag you’ve seen one someone’s Facebook presumptuously as they post a link to a song, but do you really know what it means? The term “Pyro” itself means something related to fire. I know it sounds corny but when you listen to music being put out you can be assured that it’s nothing less than flames.
