I must say, I’ve not always been a big fan of The Internet. I liked songs here and there but never really got to that point where I could say that I fuck with their music heavy. But after this album you can definitely count me in as a fan. I’ve officially been sucked into the whirlwind of soul and acid- jazz that this band exudes.
“Ego Death” starts on an edgier, more confident note with the song “Get Away” with it’s extra sexual and direct lyrics. I’m a super R&B fan, but the really really soulful kind, so I tend to listen to more 90’s stuff. I just feel like the music was realer, and more straight forward back then. With the Internet , they kind of bring back that feeling , they don’t over-complicate their lyrics, and Syd’s delicate and sensuous voice relaxes your nerves and creates a wonderful sultry atmosphere. In my opinion the best part of their music, is the instrumentation , I mean , they are a band! The ambiance induced by the blend of each instrument is overwhelming and impressive.
Simply put, this is amazing , enjoyable music. However, I wouldn’t give them an A+ for originality. When I sent my producer friend a link to their music, he blatantly replied saying “that era is over” , and although I disagree with his remark( because artists shouldn’t feel limited to making music by “Eras” or “Genres” or whatever) I do understand where it’s coming from. The Internet’s music feels nostalgic to me because I feel like I’ve heard it all before, many of their songs have beats that just too similar to a lot of old stuff. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. I loooooove how Syd uses her voice, she sings passionately and wholeheartedly. There’s just too much trap music influence these days, now even Mariah is rap-singing in her songs, so I appreciate any singer who is actually singing now.
My favorite track off “Ego Death” is “Girl” ft Kaytranada. When I heard that Kaytra was going to be on the album I obviously flipped out and couldn’t wait to hear what was in store. This song is everything yo, It’s one of the more exceptional songs by this band. It just has it’s own flair and vibe to it and Syd’s voice is like silk… so very smooth and soothing. And might I mention how that bass-line is HARD! Girl ultimately gives off an otherworldly , sensual feeling. Even though they do it in their own futuristic way, their music is reminiscent of the good old days of Soul and R&B. This is something I absolutely adore about them.
I wasn’t going to mention this but the fact that Syd is singing to another girl, has always made their music even more appealing to me for some reason(I’m 100% straight though lol). Ego Death clearly shows their growth as a band from their sophomore album “Feel Good”. This album has a more mature, hard-hitting kind of sound. You get sucked up in it as soon as you play the first track, and if you’re a fan of real, organic music you will enjoy this LP. It also has some interesting features including Janelle Monae, James Fauntleroy Vic Mensa, and unsurprisingly,Tyler the Creator.
Other stand-out songs in this album for me include “Special Affair” the first single from the album, and “Palace- Curse” (DIS MY JAM) with it’s mellow yet aggressive tones, and an amazing performance by Steve Lacy(he’s dope asf) .Soo anyway this is album is hot…the type of chill music you should listen to late at night. Make sure you check it out!
