When XXL released their “Freshmen of the Year” cover a couple of weeks ago, I came across a name that I had previously not even heard of. This of course stirred up a lot of curiosity inside of me , like how could I not know this person? I’m supposed to be keeping tabs with all the upcoming spitters in the game right now. This little mystery went by the name of Goldlink, and I was determined to unravel it song by song.
He loves to sing about love and drugs( or love with drugs…) and he’s back with a new joint which isn’t any different. The Weeknd blesses us with a new song , “Can’t Feel My Face” which is a little more up- beat than his usual stuff, and he sings flawlessly about yet another drug -filled relationship that he is experiencing and somewhat enjoying. After this one I’m definitely excited to hear what he’s got in store for us in his upcoming album “Chapter III”.
“You know where to find me when it finally falls apart.”
For this week’s segment I chose Mf Doom because in my opinion he’s definitely one of the most underappreciated lyricists/rappers of all time. He started out in the group KMD with MC Rodan and his younger brother, DJ Subroc, who was tragically killed in 1993. This deeply affected him, making him retreat from the hip hop scene for 3 years . However, he later on managed to have a prolific career even without a lot of publicity. He rarely does interviews and wears a mask similar to Marvel’s super villain, DR. DOOM, to obscure his face.
Everyone’s had this experience at parties attended by Hip-Hop Heads who always claim upon hearing the soundtrack for the evening “Oh man Hip-Hop ain’t the same no more” , “These new cats ruined it” and the odd “You ain’t got no Will Smith back there?”
This article isn’t necessarily against any new music. Personally I love some Travi$ Scott at my parties and I could cause several fatal accidents when I’m driving to that Lil Herb,Durk,Bibby and all the Drill gods out there.
This is basically an appreciation and educational opportunity for all the people out there who think Rakim Allah and Nasir are Egyptian mythology heroes (Don’t come at me guys. No death threats for my sister please. We cool, right?)
