I’ve always gravitated towards things with meaning,  especially when it comes to music. By now anyone who actively reads this blog knows I only endorse music with substance and usually with a positive message.  The deeper the better, and although complexity may be challenging , in my opinion it just improves the listening experience.  With that said,I recently came across “Growth and Awareness” , a collaborative album by two upcoming rappers from Illinois, ErikMFosa and Nicholas Sean.

This album takes you on a journey of personal growth, self – discovery and struggle. Songs like “Conversations with God” capture your attention with skilfully rapped lyrics that spark thought in the listener’s mind. And that tends to happen a lot once you get engrossed in this project.  A collection of predominantly conscious songs, this album’s content surrounds the subjects of race, money and other  world problems.

My favorite track is probably “Sprout[ Act II]” even though no one actually raps in it, it’s pretty much 6 minutes of truth being candidly spoken over a nostalgic beat. It’s a truly inspiring experience to listen to these two rappers strive to spread awareness on the ills of the world, and put out a positive message using a genre which many people tend to associate with violence and drugs.
Ultimately, hip hop needs more rappers like this. Not only are they talented, they are enlightened and  Growth and Awareness encourages us all to learn more and be knowledgeable of the things going on around us. Once I pressed play, I could’t stop listening … it’s the kind of album that intrigues your mind and absorbs your attention all through. These two conscious rappers deserve waaaayy more credit, and you should all give their album a listen!
